Even Don Quixote had a friend in Sancho Panza. While trying to support my daughter, I had no one. My Dulcinea had qualified for the municipal stage of a school competition. It was a great joy! We were all looking forward to the competition, set to take place in mid-March. On the eve, we were shocked to find out that the competition had been held on the previous Saturday. The change had been changed, so to speak, but no one had let us know. I emailed the school administration, asking for an explanation. I advised the principal to use her authority to suggest an ad-hoc examination of my beauty from Toboso, and to thus admit her mistake and attempt to fix it. No answer. And so, I got on my Rocinante and presented myself at the secretary’s office, ready to get down to business. I was given a registration number and a formal apology. As it turned out, the secretary’s father had had a heart attack right on the day when the inspectorate had announced the change of date. The lady had taken the day off, being replaced by someone with no computer skills whatsoever. The official electronic message had not been read. I placed my quixotic bowl on my head and went home. The following day, I wrote to the district and municipal school inspectorates, expressing the same grievance. I wasted my time calling two phone numbers, and not even the answering machine picked up. With no confirmation, I valiantly attacked the flock of sheep at the Ministry of Education. The result was dark comedy: it’s not possible to make a complaint or intimation on the Ministry’s official website, unless these concern the software and website itself! (http://www.edu.ro/index.php/sitecontact)I resolved to try to obtain an audience about mid-week. If you can believe this, it was scheduled to take place in a building located two steps from the high school where my daughter was supposed to compete, and one street corner away from the statue of Cervantes, not to mention at a difficult hour. Luckily, I don’t work for the state. On the way to El Dorado, Dulcinea’s palace was nowhere in sight, and the national stage of the competition was due to take place on Saturday. Around my cage, everything was quiet, like in a silent movie about knights and windmills grinding away at my free time and nerves.
